BLANK MOVEMENT- MEDIUMS OF EXPLORATION, SENIOR EXHIBITION

This collection of my work revolves around the portrayal of my beloved grandfather, affectionately known as "Poppy," in the setting of his rustic farm. Through the lens of my trusty Nikon camera, I've chosen to immortalize Poppy and his loyal companion, Kip, in the timeless medium of black and white photography. The primary objective behind these images is to encapsulate the quintessential moments that constitute the life of a dedicated farmer: the toil in the fields, the carefree moments spent playing with his faithful dog, and the watchful eye he keeps over his cattle. My motivation for creating this body of work is twofold: to refine my photography skills and to preserve a cherished chapter of my family's history.

Through these evocative images, my intention is to spotlight the inherent beauty and significance of simple, everyday moments. By peering through the lens of my camera, viewers can connect with the raw emotions captured therein, as well as discern the purpose behind these photographic endeavors. While I invite the audience to craft their own narratives about the subject, I also aim to thread recurring themes throughout the collection.

My creative process draws inspiration from the photographic legacy of Dorothea Lange during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl era. In mirroring Lange's thematic approach and adding my personal artistic flair, I seek to reveal the profound emotions and gritty realities that define daily life.

Additionally, my work bears the imprint of Ansel Adams' exquisite black and white landscapes. Like Adams, I endeavor to capture the awe-inspiring beauty of nature and the vast, sweeping vistas that play a significant role in this project. From the well-earned lines etched into Poppy's smile to the affectionate glint in his eyes as he interacts with his loyal canine companion, and the unyielding determination etched on his face during his toil in the fields, these images provide an intimate glimpse into the essence of what makes a farmer truly exceptional.
